For their debut EP, the experimental soul band CitizenFive digs deep. The New Orleans roots of singer/percussionist Nate "Suave" Cameron and bassist Blyss anchor the whole affair, while Kevin Seal's tremolo Rhodes keeps the chords fresh and surprising. Rian Robinson, a drummer raised in the gospel churches of the East Bay, glides gracefully from simmer-sizzle to stomping kick and tree-trunk snares. Buoyant lead single "Pacific Love" shines brightly, as do the sharp political commentary of "No Justice No Peace" and the anthemic summer jam, "C5 is Here." CitizenFive welcome some local luminaries on the EP's bonus tracks, with remixes from Spread, Kyron, and Chroj, as well as verses from an underground gravel-baritone hero, DESwon the Great Elefante. As an opening salvo, this EP is a strong statement for Oakland's newest party-starters.
